NEWS UPDATE Awards Walsall Waterfront South has won one of this year’s Southern Staffordshire Design Awards. Organised by the Southern Staffordshire Partnership, which is supported by the 5 local authorities in the region, the awards recognise excellence in design in the area. At the awards lunch on 19th October the project and the practice won the award for a scheme located anywhere in the UK designed by an architect based in Southern Staffordshire. This follows the success in May in gaining two prizes at the 2011 Waterways Renaissance Awards, a national awards programme organised by The Waterways Trust, which recognises exceptional projects that are using canals and rivers to enrich people’s lives across the United Kingdom. The project was the Winner in the Area Based Regeneration category and Runner-Up in the Design & Construction category. A major regeneration project for Jessup, the first completed dwellings (6 houses and 17 apartments) on Phase 1 were handed over to Accord Housing Association in January 2011. A further 119 apartments and 16 houses plus commercial units were completed on 31st March 2011, with 67 of the apartments leased to Walsall Manor Hospital, completing Phase 1. Construction work on Phase 2, a further 164 apartments in two blocks, with 82 apartments taken by Caldmore Area Housing, commenced in January 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2012. Both phases have benefiting from HCA Kickstart funding and are an integral part in creating a vibrant canalside quarter in a rejuvenated Walsall. Cornwall Mews, Hednesford has been shortlisted in two categories in the LABC National Awards 2011 to be held in London on 1st November. This is the second year running we have had a scheme shortlisted in the National Awards.
